Friday’s Reflections

Michael on the Marginal Way in Ogunquit Maine

Last evening Michael tested for his orange belt in Taekwondo. He did very well and I was proud of him. He has been taking Taekwondo for almost a year now. The school he belongs to is called Yoon’s Martial Arts in Dover DE. After his first month taking the classes I realized he found his tribe. He smiled spontaneously, tried very hard and excels in the environment which at times mimics military order with how they line up at class, work upwards in belt colors and the discipline that each belt requires. I accompany Michael to most of his classes. I enjoy watching all the different levels and how the masters teach. I hope to start taking classes myself next year. I need to get my health and weight in better shape before I can start. Right now I am overweight, asthmatic and on heart medication that regulates my heart rate. I need to have another procedure on my heart and I was told I can then not need to take any heart medicines-right now I take four. Once the hospitals free up and the virus is better under control I hope to have the procedure done.

Michael and I went clothes shopping for him late morning. I don’t know if you have shopped for clothes in the past years but you can’t try them on so you have to sort of guess. Michael has lost eighty pounds in the past year and his body is transforming into muscle with his workouts and diet change. We purchased some pants and shirts that thankfully fit him well.

I had a good visit with my mom today. She was very eager to talk about current events. I brought her the newspapers for the past two days for her. She was interested in the inauguration. I hope to be able to visit her in person by summer. My mom has had her first COVID-19 vaccine. I hope to sign up as soon as my group is in line for it.

I hope to hand write some cards and letters this weekend. I have one friend who writes me postcards a lot. We talk on the phone about once every few months. I love getting postcards. I need to write some letters to friends who wrote me during Christmas.

Do you still write letters and send cards? I received a sweet package from a friend this week. She surprised me with it-it included a candle, incense and honey. It really touched me that she took the time to do this. I have another friend who sends me her handmade cards every few months that always inspire me.

I hope you have a great weekend and thanks for checking in. I always love to hear from you and see where everyone is from.

  1. I love writing and receiving cards. I write Christmas cards, about 50-60. It takes days to do as I try to write something personal in each one. I enjoy hearing from people during the holidays and afterwards, or anytime. I still write thank you notes as well.

  2. Your statement about not being allowed to try on clothes caught me a bit off guard! I haven’t gone into a store to shop for clothes in years, partly because I wear what I have practically forever and partly because if I do want or need something I know I can find it online. I guess I would have been in a pandemic shock if I had wandered into a clothing store unaware!
